Announcing "Fierce Moon," a novel of romance, suspense...and magic.

(See below for a 10% discount promo code and a video trailer! Also, watch The View tomorrow ... Whoopi is supposedly doing a segment on the publisher, and Barbara Walters may be showing a copy of my book!)

Personalized Werewolf Romance Novel - Fierce Moon! As some of you may recall, my first book, Tropical Treasure, was a romantic comedy about reality TV, created as a personalized romance novel -- where you can customize the heroine and hero's names/features, such as hair style, body type, best friend, and even a pet.

Fierce Moon is also a personalized romance, and this time we delve into a far more ASFesque style. As in, angsty...gothic...sexy...suspenseful... and, yes, there's a healthy dose of the supernatural. Think Sherlock Holmes meets True Blood!

Fierce Moon is about a woman -- a librarian who loves mystery novels -- who discovers an antique true crime journal that holds a spell... and possibly a curse. She's swept back in time to 1892 England, where she lands in the midst of a serial killer's reign of terror. And she might be the next victim!

Pretending to fit in as a Victorian lady, thanks to her cleverness and knowledge of the era, our heroine meets and matches wits with a brilliant, sophisticated and somewhat arrogant consulting detective a la Sherlock Holmes. She's instantly attracted, captivated and intrigued by the man's secretive nature, and becomes nearly as obsessed with solving the puzzle of his existence as with discovering the murderer who's stalking the neighborhood.

But the mysteries collide when our heroine begins to suspect that the trail of clues in the murder investigation leads right to the hero's door. Is the detective's elegant facade hiding a monstrous criminal? Has our heroine given her heart...and body...to a beast?

From a glittering opera gala to a creepy Victorian morgue, from wealthy but warped sophisticates to poor but savvy urchins, and from one man's supremely rational mind to the savage desperation of a prowling, unearthly beast ... Fierce Moon takes you on a sexy, haunting journey.

Despite the distant locale and era, fans of ASF will definitely feel right at home! And since this is a personalized novel, you can write yourself and a special someone as the starring roles. Heck, add Martina and Mike as the leads if you want!

Click here for more info and a free demo/excerpts! Fierce Moon costs $39.95 and would make a great Valentine's Day gift (to yourself or a loved one!). And I can offer a 10% discount to you guys. During checkout, add promo code TW10 -- or VAL10 if for some reason the first one doesn't work. (But VAL10 will expire after Valentine's Day.)

Also, check out a trailer for the novel:

Thanks for your indulging me in this self-hype! This was actually a project begun by another author, with my editing/assisting in outlining the tale. When the first draft required a near-total rewrite, I was assigned the job with a three-week deadline. I'm extremely proud of the finished novel, both for its content (which is right up my alley) and the fact that I actually completed it, and so quickly.

V. glad u did it! Congrats. I'm sure the book is wonderful but the title... It is publisher's idea?

Why are you writing "self-insert" novels of all genres? I mean, is there particular attraction? Or they are simply easier to publish?

Hey Cruella! Haven't seen you here in a while, I'm so glad you're okay. Thanks so much.

The title was created by the original author, and we ran with it 'cause it was much better than the other options we'd batted around! I actually like it, but that's probably because I've been living with it for two months now.

That's a great question about the personalized novel thing. As you guessed, it's pretty much the easiest opportunity for me. I was originally approached back in 2001 by the publisher, who at the time wanted a light romance novel based on reality tv (to piggyback on the success of Survivor and so on). I'd been recommended by another websoap author, who'd originally been recruited for the job but couldn't fit it into his schedule.

Anyway, the proposed book was so totally not my area of expertise -- I've always wanted to write a romance novel, since I was a kid, but my interests were always historicals rather than contemporaries, and "lighthearted" isn't exactly my metier -- but the project seemed doable and just ambitious enough to tickle my fancy. So that's how I started with Tropical Treasure, which was published in 2002.

Since then I've been strictly an editor and web designer for the company, because of my writing paralysis and fear of committing to a project without seeing it through. That kind of thing is shameful enough with ASF, my own webseries; I was petrified of flopping out on my publisher. So for eight years I turned him down, though I've done plenty extensive editing/rewrites on several books. And ironically, Fierce Moon happened for me because I had to step in for someone else who was a bit overextended him/herself. I was originally the editor for the book, and helped develop the outline. Then came Christmas and suddenly we needed a thorough rewrite and there was no time for anyone else to do the job, which had to be completed by early January! So that's how I was kinda forced to get past my fears and take this on, and I'm very very glad I did.

All this is to say that in the past I've only been able to produce a book when there was basically no other option! I'm not sure what my experience would be if I had to seek publication from a "regular" publishing house. I don't really have any self-contained stories I want to tell, aside from one gothic romance/mystery that I've been mulling over since '94 or so. I prefer the continuing saga format.

I will say this book has been a particularly rewarding experience It's true that these personalized books are gimmicky and have lots of restrictions on what I can do vis a vis plotting and characterization -- you can't have characters that are too warped or twisted, except for the villains, and there's a limit to how much depth one can accomplish within a 40 - 45K word novella that's intended to be a fun fantasy for the reader. But they have been a great way to challenge myself and prove that I can finish a self-contained project, meet deadlines, and even within the confines of the genre, make the stories/characters as interesting and well-rounded as possible. And most important, they're enjoyable. At least, I think so. Fierce Moon is the best of both worlds for me: it's dark, mysterious, and relatively angsty (if you go to the demo page you can see some of the darker stuff in the final excerpt), but also has moments of humor and fantasy/escapism as well.

Thanks very much for stopping by, Cruella! I hope everything's going okay with you.

In other news, the book was featured very very briefly along with three other Book By You novels on The View today! They were having a "what to get for Valentine's Day" segment, and Whoopi picked up Fierce Moon and showed the version we'd sent with Barbara Walters as the heroine. Heh. (We used Gabriel Byrne as her hero. Not a bad choice, yum!) And Sherri Sheppherd read from another novel, Racing Hearts, which had been personalized for her. That was fun. We'll probably put it on the website once we get a clip, so I'll link that up when it's available.

I am afraid I haven't been further from "okay" in my life :_( , nevertheless, I am very glad for you. It is interesting that you, of all people, end up writing romances. I know you can do a lot of different things with genre, but still, it is ironic since you like darkness and cynicism in writing.

This is so cool. I think it is almost fame!

Oh God-- I'm truly sorry to hear that, Cruella. I doubt there's anything I can do, but on the off-chance there is, please let me know, either via PM or email if you prefer.

I know, right? But there's a soppy side of me too; the side that loves Jane Austen and La Boheme and cries at both Anne of Green Gables and (much more embarrassingly) fluff like You've Got Mail. I started out hooked on classic soaps after all; the romances that captivated me may have had darker twists to 'em, but they were, in the end, romances. I think the reason I was a good match for this book was its gothic flavor.

I think it would only be almost fame if anyone knew who I was! If you want to see the segment, you can view it on this news page. Just click either the "As seen on The View" or "Watch Video" buttons. Oh -- and here's a nice little reviewlet from a reader. "Best-written" of the BBY books she's read. Very cool and kind of her to say!

Anyway thanks again, and most importantly I hope things get better for you soon.
